AFI Newswire, May 24, 2009: The family released a statement this morning saying that Edward “Ed” Betta Fish died of natural causes at his vacation home in Fort Lauderdale on Wednesday morning. A private service was held yesterday in his honor. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that anyone wishing to offer their condolences send a donation to the Global Legion of Underwater Bettas (G.L.U.B) in Ed’s name.

It’s been two years since I roamed the beach on Christmas day and I’ve had two requests for what it’s like here today. Most of the day was bright and sunny and there were lots of people on the beach by mid-day.

Yesterday morning, I took a little photo journey through my (relatively) new neighborhood, documenting the various signs that mark the hotels and resorts that are here. You’ll see there’s an eclectic mix of new, old and very old that give the neighborhood some style and character. As I walked I tried to think how these older places were when they were brand new–crisp, clean, fresh paint, with people who were proud of the place they just created. Now many sit in various stages of disrepair, some ready for demolition, some being renovated.
